Dave Sirota's 44x12 ft. Schweiss hydraulic hangar door gives him ample room to wheel in his Cessna 140 and vehicles he's working to restore.
Aircraft enthusiasts from more than 70 nations go to the world famous Oshkosh Air Show with their eyes to the sky. It brings in more than 10,000 aircraft and displays nearly 2,500 aircraft of all makes and sizes. Dave Sirota, President of Bassuk Brothers Property Management firm in Oro Valley, Arizona, a bedroom community adjacent to Tucson, didn't go there to look at aircraft, he had another mission in mind.
"I went to Oshkosh specifically with the intent of ordering a hangar door. I even took my blueprints with me. I was expecting to buy a different brand because my neighbor had one. I went and talked to them! It was pretty much, 'Here's the price -- take it or leave it'" said Sirota. "I talked to two other door dealers, then I ran into Mike Schweiss. He took the time to talk in depth. He looked at my blueprints and made some recommendations for structural enhancements that would make the door work better and then we talked money - he was very generous."
When asked about shipping the door to Arizona, Mike told him if he wasn't in a real big hurry Schweiss Doors would deliver the door when they had a truck going that way to another jobsite in the southwestern states and wouldn't charge him anything for delivery. That wasn't all that sold him on the door.
"We talked about putting in a mandoor, and he discounted the cost on that. He gave me some ideas on windows and didn't charge me for modification needed for the windows to go in. It was just an incredible experience, he probably spent more than a half hour with me. He was generous with his time and had a good sense of humor - he's a good joke teller. I just hit it off with him. I never considered anything else after I spoke with Mike," said Sirota.
Dave Sirota, of Bassuk Bros. property management firm near Tucson, Arizona, put a synthetic stucco exterior on this hangar and hangar door. He uses the hangar to house his 1946 Cessna 140 and also does car restoration in it.
Sirota decided on a 44x12 ft. Schweiss hydraulic door for his hangar which houses a 1946 Cessna 140 and also provides for a small workshop in the corner of the hangar where he does car restoration.
"I love the door. It gets pretty warm here in Arizona. I chose the hydraulic door because I like how it provides shade from the hot sun if I want to work outside my hangar," said Sirota. The hangar is actually owned by my wife, Carla Keegan, I'm technically just a tenant of hers," laughed Sirota.
Sirota and his wife wanted to put a stucco exterior coat on their new hangar to match their house which sits about 30 yards away. A ridge or panel look extending six inches out at the bottom of the door gives it a nice unique look.
"We used a synthetic stucco. If you put a regular stucco on I don't think it would work because it is so brittle and about a half-inch thick. We applied it with a trowel, it's like a super thick paint, it flexes and does not crack and is lighter in weight for the hydraulic rams to pick up. This stuff is maybe an 1/8 to a 1/4 inch thick. It comes in 5-gallon buckets," explained Sirota.
Sirota said he saved a lot of money by installing the hydraulic door by himself with the help of a few friends. He rented a forklift and had the door installed within six hours.
Installation of the door was another story he likes to tell. Sirota said he let the doors sit on the ground in front of his hangar for about two months while he worried and contemplated whether or not he could do the job himself. He even contacted a company in Phoenix which told him they would want $5,000 to do the installation for him.
"I was really intimidated by it. I talked to Jeremy (at Schweiss Doors) 20 times and he convinced me I could do it. He said if you can restore cars, you can put in this door. So I finally built up my courage, contacted a few friends, rented a forklift and Saturday morning we put it in. It went in exactly the way it was supposed to and fit perfectly. We got it in, with the hydraulics hooked up, within six hours. It was a wonderful experience," said Sirota.
The door is living up to all his expectations and Sirota said that since his door was installed he has recommended Schweiss doors to many others which he is sure resulted in three or four people buying Schweiss doors for themselves.
"I'm really pleased with the Schweiss service. I didn't buy a Schweiss Door. I bought it from Mike Schweiss - it was absolutely relationship driven. The door specifications were not as important as my relationship with Mike," expressed Sirota.
Sirota chose a Schweiss Hydraulic one piece door over a bifold door. He likes the fact that it provides shade from the hot Arizona sun when he chooses to work outside his hangar.

When I decided to start my own management company, I named it after my mother's maiden name, which is Bassuk, resurrecting the Bassuk Brothers named in honor of my mother and for what my grandfather had accomplished," noted Sirota.

Inadequate experience with another company leads farmer to Schweiss Doors
It was a 70 ft. hydraulic door, very lightly built, it came in two sections that didn't meet together when they put it together. It showed up bent, and when raised it would bend, very poor weld quality, with welds missing in places. It was a piece of crap, I've never seen something so poor, there was no engineering done on it. There was no quality control. |
