"What's unique about the door is when it's open it creates this natural canopy. You can sit right up next to the window. So if its rainy or misting outside you get the benefit of the outside visual and still have the advantage of that outdoor/indoor feel. Once I saw this door, I was attracted to it and knew it was the right fit. I fell in love with it at first sight."

Doc B's Fresh Kitchen, Chicago, IL
Doc B's Fresh Kitchen in Chicago was established to become an extension of your own kitchen. It's a place where you can come to grab something quick and healthful off their extensive menu; stay for a productive business meeting, or gather with friends and family.
By using fresh and mindful ingredients, Doc B's helps customers maintain a balanced lifestyle. Partnering with local, midwest and national farmers and purveyors who they know and trust allows them to deliver the best menu possible. Two local vendors are Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits and local seasonal produce comes from McClug Farms.
"We don't follow trends, we set them. That's why we call ourselves fresh-casual. Just like you, we're all about innovation and convenience. You're busy, but you deserve the best- in a quick and comfortable setting. Our tech-to-table approach allows you to customize your dining experience. Whether you prefer a streamlined order-at-the-counter bite, or a full service meal, we're here to give you what you want." notes their website.
Doc B's Fresh Kitchen, Gold Coast location, is at 100 East Walton Street, just off North Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. A Schweiss 16.2 ft. x 7.9 ft Hydraulic Glass Designer door opens to the outside for additional dining.
With a focus on fresh, house-made, and locally minded dishes, Doc B's, with two locations at Gold Coast and River North, also offers an extensive craft beer, wine and spirits selection.
Doc B's (Gold Coast) Kitchen opened September 13, 2013 and River North opened June 10th of last year at 100 East Walton Street, just off North Lake Shore Drive. Gold Coast underwent extensive remodeling from originally being a dental studio. River North was transformed from a T-Shirt business. Doc B's is currently in the process of expanding their market to other locations.
The Gold Coast location features a Schweiss one-piece hydraulic glass designer door which opens wide at the entrance to the outside where customers can also enjoy their dinners sidewalk style.
The custom-made Schweiss Designer Door is 16.2 ft. wide x 7.9 3/4 ft. tall. It is equipped with electric photo eye sensors.
The door opens to an outside dining area which seats 20 customers. That was one of the reasons owner, Craig Bernstein decided on a Schweiss door after being introduced to it by his architect Dwayne MacEwen of DMAC Architecture in Chicago.
"What's unique about the door is when it's open it creates this natural canopy. You can sit right up next to the window. So if its rainy or misting outside you get the benefit of the outside visual and still have the advantage of that outdoor/indoor feel," explained Bernstein. Once I saw this door, I was attracted to it and knew it was the right fit. I fell in love with it at first sight," said Bernstein.
"My customers love the door. They are very enamored by the hydraulic arms. We get a ton of compliments on the functionality and usefulness of it and the aesthetics and operation of it as well. We try to use it as much as possible. It's like driving a convertible, putting the top down and then blasting the heat," chuckled Bernstein.
The glass door gives off a nice reflection from the outside looking in.
Photo eye sensors on the door offer an added safety feature.
Jeremy Nye, with DMAC Architecture in Evanston, Illinois, just outside of Chicago, said his firm put considerable thought into this project before deciding on recommending a Schweiss hydraulic one-piece door for Doc B's.
"We researched operable storefronts and operable window systems previously on the Internet. We started thinking about how they could be applicable to some other projects we were working on. Schweiss doors really caught our eye and stood out, especially those on airplane hangars. I think we looked at every conceivable door type available. We looked at bifold, horizontal and vertical, scissor type systems, and overhead glass garage doors as well. We mostly wanted a strong connection to the outside street energy of Doc B's. The single piece storefront that moves was the most dramatic option. It's a great door, the simplicity of it is one of the nicest features of it," said Nye. "We'd use it again and definitely recommend it to others looking for a really simple way to open up a large opening."

Doc B's offers a delicious spread of options featuring everything from their California Kale Salad to fall-off-the-bone Danish BBQ pork slow cooked ribs; Butternut Squash Soup to The Dragon Burger; Grilled Artichokes, a Maine Lobster Sandwich and "Wok Out™" bowls served with greens and cashews. Bernstein said everything they do is a staple to their menu and they can tell a story about each item.
"Wok Out™" is the number one sold item on our menu, not only is it exclusive to Chicago but it is exclusive throughout the world. It's a great describer for building your own stir fry. We take a lot of pride in whatever we do and to do it the best," noted Bernstein.
Upon entering, you can make selections from their digital menu board. When you're ready, place your order with their greeters, grab a wireless table tracker and sit wherever you like or take your meal to go. If you prefer a full-service experience you can bypass the order counter and allow their greeters to seat you in their dining room where you will be provided with a menu and your food will be delivered the old fashioned way — with gratitude and a smile.
Both of their locations in the Gold Coast and River North are conveniently located in downtown Chicago. Gold Coast is adjacent to one of the most exclusive shopping and fine dining areas in Chicago. The two kitchens are located eight blocks from each other.
"That's one of the cool things about Chicago, you can be eight blocks apart and be in an entirely different community and cater to a different clientele. Gold Coast caters to a more established older generation who have lived in downtown Chicago for an extended time. River North is a little more young with young professionals and starter families. Doc B's is popular for all ages," said Bernstein.
Catering orders are taken before 9 a.m. on the day of your event by emailing: catering@docbsfreshkitchen.com or by calling (312) 626-1300. Delivery service is also available for select orders. Menu items are pictured at: docbsfreshkitchen.com
